Who is Barry?
Barry began training in the martial arts while in high school. He studied Shotokan Karate Do and PaQua. While in college be became an assistant instructor in self defense classes held at a local university. Always seeking the reality of combat, he was hired as a bouncer in a country western bar. It was during actual combat that he began to see the failure of classical karate and kung fu. Thereafter, he became a student of kenpo karate. His love of kenpo as a practical system of self defense continues to this day. To improve his stand up fighting, Barry began training with undefeated Muay Thai champion Tony Moore.
Barry understood the importance of learning grappling to complement his stand up skills. He began to study Shootfighting under the former champion Bart Vale. Barry was awarded instructorship status under Bart. Watching the emergence of the art of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Barry began researching the Gracie family and their art. He sought out Pedro Carvalho, a leading Brazilian Jiu Jitsu champion and teacher. Pedro awarded Barry his blue and purple belts. Todd Lawerence, a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt under Renato Tavares, awarded Barry his brown and black belts. Thereafter, Barry followed a 20+ year desire to train with Sigung Paul Vunak. Understanding Paul's lineage and knowledge of Jeet Kune Do, Barry trained with Paul and received his full and senior instructor certifications in Contemporary Jeet Kune Do. In 2014, Sigung Paul Vunak appointed Barry as his East Coast Regional Director, and then Director of Operations. Barry brings this extensive training to his students. His knowledge and experience virtually guarantee that his students will learn the devasting art of Jeet Kune Do.
In summary, Barry has been training in the martial arts in excess of 40 years. During that time, he has earned an 8Th degree Black Belt in Kenpo, a 8Th degree Black Belt in Okinawan Open Karate, a 6Th degree Black Belt in Tracy's Kenpo, and a Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. In addition, he has trained in Tang Soo Do, Tae Kwon Do, Wing Chun Kung Fu, Kali, PaQua, Shotokan Karate-Do, Tai Chi and is a Shootfighting instructor. He has had the privilege of training numerous mixed martial arts champions on a local and regional level. He has been interested in the teachings of Sigung Paul Vunak for 20 years. He considers it a great honor to have been awarded his Senior Full Instructor certification by Sigung Vunak and personally appointed by Sigung Vunak to be his Director of Operations and the Director of the PFS Grappling Association.
