Competition, Self Defense and classes for the Over 40!

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a complete system of self defense and also a competitive sport.  Our Brazilian Jiu Jitsu program was developed to functionalize the techniques of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu to meet the demands of street violence in society today as well as compete in grappling matches for sport. In addition to learning the sport techniques that seem to dominate BJJ today, the student will learn how to adapt those sport techniques to deal with a street fight with no rules. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu was developed by the Gracie family in Brazil. It has as its foundation Japanese Jiu Jitsu. Helio Gracie, the youngest of five brothers who had poor health, modified a number of the traditional Jiu Jitsu techniques so that a smaller and weaker person could protect himself. When you study Brazilian Jiu Jitsu you will get in the best shape of your life. An hour of BJJ can burn almost a 1000 calories. You will learn how to breathe and relax even during times of extreme stress. You will increase flexibility which is essential to a healthy lifestyle. In addition, you will be able to earn belt ranks in Jiu Jitsu that will be a real confidence booster for you. Training in BJJ will enable you to actually learn a move and know that you can use it.

What happens during a training session?

Every training session begins with stretching and cardio. After you have warmed up, you will be taught several jiu jitsu moves from both a sport and a self defense perspective. After that, you will try your sport moves against someone who is not going to just let you perform the techniques. You will really learn the technique. After that, you will learn jiu jitsu self defense moves against an opponent who is trying to strike your eyes and groin. The sessions, while sounding dangerous, is taught in a safe but realistic manner. What you learn today, you will be able to use today. Before class concludes, there will be a time of philosophy and teaching using jiu jitsu as the vehicle for self improvement.

What makes your Brazilian Jiu Jitsu program different?

Helio Gracie made the following statement about his family art of Jiu Jitsu: "I did not spend my life trying to improve a system that would make me look good at a sport competition, full of fancy spins and colorful turns. Instead, I have developed a self defense method that is complete, easy, and effective." The Brazilian Jiu Jitsu program taught at Progressive Fighting Systems of Virginia will emphasize practical self defense. It is not enough to train against someone who is punching and kicking you. Training must include defenses against someone who is trying to attack your eyes and groin. It is a part of the Contemporary Jeet Kune Do course of study. If you want a school that focuses on the winning of medals, then this is probably not the school for you. However, if you want to learn a system of self defense that you can use at 2:00AM in a dark parking lot or if you hear a noise in the middle of the night at your home, then this program is for you.
